PLEASE READ the BTE FAQ BEFORE reaching out:

Z-Machine Productions cannot respond to all inquiries let alone those whose questions are answered in the BTE FAQ.

Please check the official Before the End Facebook Page, as all the latest up-to-date announcements are noted there.

Q: HOW and WHEN will Before the End: Searching for Jim Morrison be released?
A: The plan is to release via VOD/DVD [and a possible art house theatrical run] as soon as humanly possible.

Q: What the hell is taking you so LONG?
A: In addition to the usual unforeseen filmmaking delays, Z-Machine continues to work far outside the traditional Hollywood system via an independent budget. In Hollywood, “indie” or “low-budget” generally implies “only” $10 million. A true independent documentary like Before the End finds one working with a budget that wouldn’t cut the mustard on a week of catering costs for a typical TV series. BTE is a labor of love and not some cookie-cutter documentary that will be rushed to market. In any event, Z-Machine is all about quality versus quantity.

Keep in mind Z-Machine is largely Jeff Finn working as a one-person production company. Jeff hired professional editors and post-production assistants to help him reach the end, but most independent docs take 5-10 years to complete, so in that sense BTE is right in the zone.

Screw this… I’m outta here!
A: Hey, that wasn’t a question. But feel free to move on and/or create your own multi-part independent docuseries film about the REAL Jim Morrison, all the while being patient enough to endure the time it takes to earn the trust of numerous Morrison family, friends, lovers, classmates and associates, not to mention raising the budget for continued research, development, equipment, production, air travel, car rental, hotel stays, post-production, etc. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and the same may be said of Paris, Tallahassee, Alexandria, Alameda, etc. And Morocco.

Q: Well, if your budget is low, won’t BTE suck?
A: That’s subjective, as is the case with any film regardless of budget. Many multi-million dollar big-budget Hollywood movies “suck,” as opinions go. Z-Machine maintains BTE is THE documentary film serious Morrison fans have longed to see. Your milage may vary.

Q: Were John Densmore and Robby Krieger interviewed for Before the End?
A: Jeff Jampol, the manager representing Densmore and Krieger as well as The Doors, rejected Jeff Finn’s requests for their interviews. Sour grapes aside, Before the End‘s primary focus has ALWAYS been Jim Morrison, not The Doors. And with all due respect to John and Robby, BTE will not  feature retreads of Doors stories the pair has retold countless times in past interviews.

Q: Why is Before the End: Searching for Jim Morrison described as “the unauthorized documystery”?
A: The “mystery” aspect is self-explanatory. Lifetime Morrison fan, Jeff Finn, seeks the unvarnished truth about WHO James Douglas Morrison was and WHY. Thus Before the End reflects Jim’s explicit candor and no-bullshit life philosophy. As Anne Moore stated in her raw interview, “Jim wanted REAL answers,” and so does Finn via BTE. For reference, note the substantial differences, in terms of candor, between Montage of Heck, the authorized documentary about Kurt Cobain, and Soaked in Bleach, its unauthorized counterpart.

Q: Will you put me in touch with Doors management, the Morrison family, Jim’s friends, and/or someone else who’s featured in BTE?
A: Absolutely not. Z-Machine is not a referral service. You’re out here on the perimeter with the other killers on the road, just like Jeff Finn was.

Q: Is Henry Rollins narrating Before the End? Grace Slick? Patti Smith? Patty Smyth? The fucking ghost of Arthur Rimbaud? Who??
A: Rollins was an early choice, but Jeff Finn, Before the End’s director, writer and researcher, will narrate. In that way, a true hardcore James Douglas Morrison fan will finally give a voice to all true hardcore James Douglas Morrison fans in their search for the REAL Jim Morrison.

Q: But what about…
A: Let’s just leave it at that for now. BTE is deep in the process of being sold to a network and you’ll be among the first to know once it officially finds its media home.

Q: Okay. Thanks.
A: That was a statement. So is this: Cheers. And thank YOU for your continued patience, enthusiasm and support!

Q: Wait! One last thing! Jim really is alive, right?!?
A: “Everything is a mystery and we’re all detectives.” ~ David Lynch
